Designed to address the range of work performed by ethics committees as part of their multiple responsibilities, including education, case consultation, and policy development. Through case studies, this book explores issues such as informed consent and refusal, decision making and decisional capacity, truth telling, end-of-life issues, and more. Hospitals, nursing homes, and home care agencies seeking approval by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) must have a standing mechanism to address ethical issues. Most organizations have chosen to satisfy this with an interdisciplinary ethics committee. The best of these committees are knowledgeable, creative, and effective resources in their institutions. Many are well meaning but lack the information, experience, and skills to negotiate adequately the complex ethical issues that arise in clinical and organizational settings. Handbook for Health Care Ethics Committees is the first resource to address the myriad responsibilities that ethics committees have, including education, case consultation, and policy development. Through case studies, the authors explore issues such as informed consent and refusal, decision making and decisional capacity, truth telling, decision-making concerns of minors, end-of-life issues, palliative care, justice in and access to health care services, and organizational ethics. Featuring an eight-chapter curriculum review and discussion of the ethical foundations of health care practice, sample policies and procedures, draft guidelines, and key legal cases, this handbook will be essential reading for every health care ethics committee member.

In the clinical setting, questions of medical ethics raise a host of perplexing problems, often complicated by conflicting perspectives and the need to make immediate decisions. In this volume, bioethicists and physicians provide a nuanced, in-depth approach to the difficult issues involved in bioethics consultation. Addressing the needs of researchers, clinicians, and other health professionals on the front lines of bioethics practice, the contributors focus primarily on practical concerns-whether ethics consultation is best done by individuals, teams, or committees; how an ethics consult service should be structured; the need for institutional support; and techniques and programs for educating and training staff-without neglecting more theoretical considerations, such as the importance of character or the viability of organizational ethics. In this work, bioethicists and physicians provide an in-depth approach to the issues involved in bioethics consultation. Addressing the needs of researchers, clinicians and other health professionals, they focus primarily on practical concerns but do not neglect theoretical considerations.

This casebook collects 64 case studies, each of which raises an important and difficult ethical issue connected with planning, reviewing, or conducting health-related research. The book’s purpose is to contribute to thoughtful analysis of these issues by researchers and members of research ethics committees (RECs, known in some places as ethical review committees or institutional review boards), particularly those involved with studies that are conducted or sponsored internationally.

Issues concerning patients' rights are at the center of bioethics, but the political basis for these rights has rarely been examined. In 'Bioethics in a Liberal Society: The Political Framework of Bioethics Decision Making', Thomas May offers a compelling analysis of how the political context of liberal constitutional democracy shapes the rights and obligations of both patients and health care professionals. May focuses on how a key feature of liberal society -- namely, an individual's right to make independent decisions -- has an impact on the most important relational facets of health care, such as patients' autonomy and professionals' rights of conscience. Although a liberal political framework protects individual judgments, May asserts that this right is based on the assumption of an individual's competency to make sound decisions. May uses case studies to examine society's approach to medical decision making when, for reasons ranging from age to severe mental disorder, a person lacks sufficient competency to make independent and fully informed choices. To protect the autonomy of these vulnerable patients, May emphasizes the need for health care ethics committees and ethics consultants to help guide the decision-making process in clinical settings. 'Bioethics in a Liberal Society' is essential reading for all those interested in understanding how bioethics is practiced within our society.
